Beware of These 2 Questionable Gummy Bear Ingredients

Gummy candies have been a sweet, go-to snack for kids and adults alike since the 1940s. And for decades, they’ve been touted as a healthy alternative to junk food. A serving size of regular store-bought gummies, roughly 17 pieces, is just 140 calories. But there’s more to the story. There are two questionable ingredients in store-bought gummies that’ll make you think twice before you open your next pack. And once you know, you’ll purchase your own gummy molds and stick to DIY gummies from here on out.

How Gummies Are Made

Your favorite gummies are made from a combination of gelatin, corn syrup, sugar, water, and artificial food coloring and flavors. These ingredients are mixed together in a gigantic vat. Then, the mixture is cooked until it becomes a thick goop called slurry. Slurry is poured into the gummy molds, which are lined with small amounts of corn starch. The slurry is then cooled and set over a 24-hour period.

Two Questionable Ingredients

The two ingredients in question are gelatin and corn syrup. On their own, neither food poses a major health risk. But there’s no way to determine where these foods were sourced from. It’s possible that the corn syrup was derived from GMO corn husks. And the gelatin could have been derived from animals on unhealthy diets or raised in unsafe environments. These unnatural sources can have detrimental effects on your health over time.

Not to mention, sugar can also be sourced from GMO beets, and artificial flavoring and colors have been proven to cause both learning and health issues down the line.

Make Your Own Gummies

You can control the ingredients in your gummy bears or worms by making your own. Purchase your own set of gummy molds and create equally tasty gummies using common ingredients from your kitchen. Honey, grass-fed gelatin, lemon juice, and orange juice are all you need to make orange gummies. Swap out the orange juice for pureed strawberries or blueberries to make other flavors.
